Desert Owls

Based out of Montreal, Desert Owls formed in late 2008 when drummer Aubin joined Freedom Sebastian (Diamond Sea) and Fantigrossi (Me & Maryjane) who had been making music together in various projects for the past five years. In 2009 the Desert Owls went into Digital Bird Studios to record eight songs, which subsequently lead to the Go Go Go Single and the 6 song Who? EP due for release in March 2010. In the fall of 2009 Desert Owls first drummer Aubin left the band on amicable terms and was replaced by a succession of fill-in drummers until Tomas Matthews was chosen as the new full-time member. As such the new Desert Owls are going back into the studio with hit maker Dave Hamelin (the Stills) to record their debut full length later in 2010.

Four years have passed since the well received Sink or swim, the first release for the band, with Harvee following it up with a sound that has more bite and rawness. After recording sessions filled with turmoil, what started out as a quintet soon became a quartet. The group now presents Furie, a rock album more restrained than its predecessor. Produced by Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Basia Bullat) and Murray Lightburn (The Dears), this sophomore album is an energetic mix of french and english songs. Initially, the album was entirely in english, but challenged by Murray, the group decided to rewrite lyrical parts in french. Since then they’ve been caught in the game.

Jeune Chilly Chill

Membre du groupe NulSiDécouvert, Jeune Chilly Chill (aka Chillmasta X aka Xavier Constant aka Ixe-13 aka Dr. Folamour) oeuvre parallèlement en tant qu’artiste solo. Depuis la sortie de l’album de NSD «Yé où le hip hop?» (2006) Chilly Chill accumule les collaborations avec des artistes de tout azimut tel que Figure 8, Omnikrom, MC La Sauce, Le Chum, Misteur Valaire, Motus 3F, Wongsifou, Drackq, Galaksy ainsi que son proche collaborateur Maître J. En plus de manier le mic, Chilly Chill assure pleinement en tant que beatmaker, mixeur et réalisateur. Jeune Chilly Chill préconise une musique hip hop originale, commerciale et positive, teintée d’humour et faite sur mesure pour les dancefloors, tant ceux des clubs que ceux improvisés lors des house party, une musique incitant à l’excès et au débordement, une musique qui n’oublie jamais d’écouter le délinquant juvénile qui sommeille en chacun de nous.

Hexes & Ohs

The story of electro-pop duo Hexes & Ohs begins with a pair of high school sweethearts and spans years of couple-hood and musical projects. 2005 saw the release of their debut album “Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover”, which reached the 2nd position on the Canadian campus radio charts, remaining in the top 10 for several months. CBC Radio 3 named “Whadaya Know?” one of their top 50 singles of the year.

Three years have passed and the album they created has taken them to places they never expected. Hexes have played CMJ, Pop Montreal, CMW, NXNE, Halifax Pop Explosion, Osheaga and have opened for Mates of State, Sloan, Kid Koala, Au Revoir Simone, Tokyo Police Club, Most Serene Republic and We Are Wolves. Their sophomore 2008 release “Bedroom Madness”, produced by Byron Wong (the Crystal Method, David Usher), has been bringing them new levels of success. The band successfully toured across Canada, quickly topping national campus radio charts and garnering rave reviews from press and media. The infectious video for first single “H-H-Highschool” is currently in rotation at MuchMusic and MTV Canada.

Le Roi Poisson, malgré son nom (au) singulier, est l’antithèse d’un projet personnel: c’est une démocratie, avec une légère tendance à l’anarchie. Les consensus sont rares, mais les majorités, inévitables, puisqu’ils sont cinq. Donc, de l’ostinage, des compromis, des débats sans fin et en bout de ligne, de la musique éclatée où tout le monde est heureux.

Meb

Born in Québec, Meb spent a long time studying music (Musicology Master, Université Laval) while having some fun doing creative writing on the side. From 1998 to 2003, she played in the electro-rock band Quai M83 (violin, composition) while composing songs that stayed mostly in her drawers. In 2000, she won the second place at the lyricist competition Chansons pour tes yeux (Montréal) and the first place as a composer at the Festival en Chanson de Petite-Vallée (Gaspésie). After an exile of two years in England (Liverpool) she decided to move to Montréal, where she spent some time performing as a spoken word artist. Many shows and publications later, she finally found the courage to perform her own songs, which, at last, left her drawers to end up on the Meb ep.

In her spare time, Meb performs with her band, publishes her videos, collages and photos on her blog (www.chezmeb.com), writes lyrics for the band Under Electric Light and contributes to the video collective urler.tv.

She will be releasing her new album Dehors on October 12th.

Mia Verko is a band that likes to rock. But not “rock” as in we’re-gonna-bash-your-brains-in-until-your-head-looks-like-an-omelette. No, we prefer to think of ourselves as a tonic for what ails you. You might think that’s a quote from BB King describing the blues – and you’d be right. Which is not to say that we’re a blues band. No, we’re more of an enthuse band, because that’s what we’d like to do to you. There’s too much dead weight in the world. We’re trying to rally support for the hopeful types in the crowd. All is not lost. In fact, we’ve come a long way, babycakes.
