Man, I love comics, I deeply and profoundly love comics, I love ‘em so much I actually think that they love me back. Any medium that gives me super-powered flying aliens, Norse gods who discuss their love for cheeseburgers or a south-Texan priest who makes people eat their guns, hallucinates John Wayne and fight’s off angels, can do no wrong with me. You remember the first time you kissed a girl? Well I remember the first time I read Judas Contract. You still have that prom picture from high school? Well I still have a picture of the first time I met Keith Giffen. I love comics and everyday I wake up in this awesome city, I try to show it as much as I can. Even though I don’t walk around wearing brightly covered shirts with reprints of classic Iron Man covers, I still yap about comics to anyone who would possibly want to listen to me. I sing about comics in the shower and I draw little super-symbols on my muffins with glazing. That’s how I roll about comics: passionately. So this little column of mine is going to be just about that passion: my love-letter to the great sequential-art: Comic books make great lovers.
Each week I’ll be covering a random assortment of these different servings. Since I’m not a great romantic, the columns here won’t be about the Barry-White-lay-dem-down-and-rubbing-sweetness kinda love but more of a profound understanding of each others universe. Comic books make great lovers will be about how comics make you better at loving things about loving culture and innocence and the reckless abandonment to pure fun. Rocket powered penguins…yay!
Reading a comic can sometimes provoke the emergence of wonderful ideas about one’s life, like talking with a loved one, a profound understanding of your being when measured up against someone else’s impressions. Although I profoundly realize that speaking about certain things with a high level of passion breeds incomfort in most, well, you can see this column like a desperate rooftop-love-roar cause comics might be the best thing I can imagine, and it’s not one the most popular opinions of the late.
To make sure all this has structure, thing that I desperately need in life, I’ve arranged most sub-parts to be individually named. Segments like: The Single life (single comics. 22pages…youknow), Swappin’ (Well this is where we talk about Trades, like in TradePaperBacks, collected volumes…and stuff) I’ll also want to talk about forgotten favorites and some news. Lastly, I’ve got this thing called FreshGoatSmile, cause next to comics, nothing make me smile like a goat grin in my direction, although I’m not shallow enough to imagine the majestic beast smiling at me specifically. Every encounter I enjoy the fact that he might be amused by my odd looking head and that for an instant we share a moment in camaraderie. FreshGoatSmile will be all about what’s new in comics this week, peaks of interest and/or scandalous affairs (oh my)
So this is my first launch, my first try at putting my affection into words, especially since it’s now obvious that I can’t express anything with Microsoft Paint.
Bee seeing you
Jim
