Hexes & Ohs’ third studio album is a triumph of sorts that was never meant to see the light of day. Following the modest success of sophomore album Bedroom Madness, the band was offered not one, but two record contracts. The first with record giants EMI/Caroline (via Fanatic Records) and the other with reputable local label Saboteur Records. When both of these fell through, the band grew disheartened and almost abandoned the project by taking an indefinite hiatus. Luckily, the time-off gave the band new perspective and allowed them to re-examine the joys of creating music. Determined to do things on their own terms and differently this time around, they expanded into a four piece and began playing shows again. This new dynamic was invigorating and inspiring, which eventually lead to the band completing an album in their home studio. While decidedly darker, Thank You showcases an energy and focus from Hexes & Ohs not seen until now.

Ce retour s’effectue à la demande populaire, après un passage remarqué en 2011 à la Canadian Music Week, au Festival Under the Snow, au Cercle à Québec en première partie de Plants & Animals, et sans oublier il y a 2 ans leur époustouflant concert à Pop Montréal où ils avaient subjugué le public de The Dears. Depuis 2010, MLCD collectionne les honneurs du public et de la critique européenne en étant notamment 2 fois lauréats aux Octaves de la Musique (Artiste de l’année et Album de l’année) et Révélation de l’année au respecté magazine belge Le Vif Focus. Three years have passed and the album they created has taken them to places they never expected. Hexes have played CMJ, Pop Montreal, CMW, NXNE, Halifax Pop Explosion, Osheaga and have opened for Mates of State, Sloan, Kid Koala, Au Revoir Simone, Tokyo Police Club, Most Serene Republic and We Are Wolves. Their sophomore 2008 release “Bedroom Madness”, produced by Byron Wong (the Crystal Method, David Usher), has been bringing them new levels of success. The band successfully toured across Canada, quickly topping national campus radio charts and garnering rave reviews from press and media. The infectious video for first single “H-H-Highschool” is currently in rotation at MuchMusic and MTV Canada.

MLCD [My Little Cheap Dictaphone] just won the Octaves belgian Music Awards 2010 as « Best Artist of the Year » and « Best album of the Year ».

‘The Tragic Tale Of A Genius’ is an old-fashioned concept record. It tells the story of a young musician, talented but tortured, and lost between his dreams and reality (loosely based on the life of Brian Wilson). It’s a modern-day mini pop-opera and is the culmination of more than two years of relentless writing by the four multi-instrumentalists that form the skeletal frame of MLCD. Guest musicians pepper the record, notably Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue who lends his tragi-broken vocal to the narrative on ‘What Are You Waiting For?’, and Black Heart Procession’s ‘Pall Jenkins on ‘In My Head’.

Recorded over the course of 12 months in Amsterdam and mixed in Dallas by John Congleton (Modest, St Vincent, Polyphonic Spree,…) , ‘The Tragic Tale Of A Genius’ fizzes and laments with Nick Cave atmospherics, and Arcade Fire pomp and grandeur. Influenced by Bernard Hermann (Alfred Hitchcock’s soundtracks) and Ziggy Stardust, it is a fascinating, sprawling record.

The collective are currently working with film director Bubble Duchesse and scenographer Catherine Cosme on a live performance involving imitation of a fifties American city with projections on phosphorescent skyscrapers.
